Helmed by Lisa Steward, The Resale Shop in Gatesville, Texas, is a community effort that benefits the local Boys & Girls Club. With one full-time manager and a team of volunteers, the store sells used clothing, purses, books, toys, and small household items. Anything that can’t be sold in the store is sold by the pound to an organization that sends the items to developing countries.

The shop’s profits help reduce the need for the Boys & Girls Club to continually solicit donations from community members. Instead, the shop provides a sustainable revenue stream so that the organization can continue helping local kids through an after school program and other activities.

My Successes:

In 2014, The Resale Shop was named Business of the Year by the Gatesville Chamber of Commerce. The business was also nominated for a SCORE Award in 2017.

How SCORE Helped:

SCORE mentor Ted Brooks helped Steward write a business plan and a cash flow spreadsheet.  Brooks also assisted in creating job descriptions for the manager and volunteers. Steward said “Thanks to Ted, we are meeting our short-term goals for the shop and anticipate a successful first year of business.”
